Today we’re talking about a classic. One of the classic slasher movies. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) based on the novel by Lois Duncan directed by Jim Gillespie and stars Jennifer Love Hewitt (before she was The Ghost Whisperer), Sarah Michelle Gellar (before she was Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Anne Hache (who has a steady career in Hollywood), Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr and Johnny Galecki (before he was on The Big Bang Theory).
If you have never heard of this movie, or the classic line “I know what you did last summer”, you have achieved the impossible. There are so many spin offs, spoofs and movies that have taken parts or the one liner from this movie. (Most notably Scary Movie).
Heck, I even knew about the infamous one liner when I was child! (Thank you The Simpsons).
After all of that, if you somehow have managed to remain completely in the dark to this classic, let me give you the run down.
After a hit-and-run accident, four friends drift apart until one year later Julie, gets an anonymous letter with the words “I know what you did last summer”, which is the beginning of the slicker wearing, hook wielding killer who then terrorizes the four friends.
Now, I had heard of the movie, knew the tag line, but didn’t actually end up watching this film until I was around 17. I instantly loved it. Well, as much as you can love a slasher film.
I Know What You Did last Summer has everything a classic slasher movie needs. Teenagers (the innocent virgin girl, the boy hopelessly in love with her, the pretty blonde and her jock boyfriend who is a bit of an asshole), the wrong-place wrong-time situation, the urban legend or incident that influences the killers choice of weapon/killing style and of course the slasher style killings. These classics are not scary in the sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat jump scares kind of way, but more the real life murderer kind of way. (To me these types of films aren’t scary. Entertaining but not scary.)
What makes this movie a bit different to other slasher films is the acting is really good compared to some other b-grade slasher movies. The film also has us, the audience, questioning if the killer is alive or actually dead and come back to life for revenge. Think Jason from Friday The 13th…. Is he alive?
I’m not going to delve into and nit pick at all the things right/wrong with I Know What You Did Last Summer. At the end of the day, this is a classic slasher film made to scare and entertain audiences not made for in-depth analysis’s on character development or directorial choices.
If horror or classic movies are your thing, or even if you just want to watch the movie that penned the one liner “I know what you did last summer”, then you really should see this movie.
Let me know in the comments if you have seen it, what you think of the movie and any other discussions you may have!
